Day 1: Nairobi – Hell’s Gate National Park – Crescent Island Sanctuary

Your journey with Trailark Tours and Safaris begins at 7:00 a.m., when our professional memorable safari guide will pick you up from your hotel or residence in Nairobi. After a short briefing about the day’s activities, you will depart toward the Great Rift Valley, a drive of approximately 2 to 2½ hours, with scenic stops along the way at designated viewpoints overlooking the dramatic escarpment.

You will arrive at Hell’s Gate National Park in the mid-morning, around 10:00 a.m. Unlike most parks in Kenya, Hell’s Gate allows visitors to explore the park on foot and by bicycle. You will spend approximately 2–3 hours inside the park, during which you may choose to enjoy a guided nature walk through the gorges, cycle along wildlife trails, or explore by memorable safari vehicle. During this time, you are likely to encounter freely roaming animals such as giraffes, zebras, gazelles, warthogs, and various antelope species, as well as observe dramatic cliffs, geothermal vents, and volcanic rock formations.

At around 1:30 p.m., you will depart Hell’s Gate and proceed to Crescent Island Sanctuary, arriving shortly afterward. Here, you will take part in a guided walking memorable safari lasting about 1½ hours. Crescent Island is known for having one of the highest concentrations of wildlife per acre in Kenya. You will walk safely among herds of wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck, and gazelle, while observing hippos grazing near the shoreline. Birdlife is abundant, including pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles. The sanctuary is unfenced, allowing wildlife to move freely between the island and surrounding areas.

Later in the afternoon, around 4:30–5:00 p.m., you will transfer to your lodge for check-in, relaxation, dinner, and overnight rest.

The route passes through rural towns, scenic landscapes, and rolling hills, giving you a glimpse of everyday life in Kenya’s countryside.

You will arrive at the Maasai Mara in time for lunch, around 1:00 p.m., followed by a short rest at the lodge. In the afternoon, from approximately 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., you will head out for your first game drive in the reserve. This introduction to the Mara offers an excellent opportunity to encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, lions, and other wildlife as they become more active in the cooler afternoon hours.

Throughout the day, you will encounter large herds of grazing animals such as wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, while predators like cheetahs and leopards may be seen resting in the grass or scanning the plains for prey. The Maasai Mara is widely regarded as Kenya’s premier wildlife destination, hosting more than 95 mammal, reptile, and amphibian species, as well as over 400 recorded bird species.
