The Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, also known as the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, is located at the western edge of Nairobi National Park. Exclusive experience. It provides a unique and heartwarming opportunity to see orphaned baby elephants and rhinos being nurtured back to health. Immerse yourself inors have the rare experience of observing the young elephants being fed milk from bottles, playing together, and savor and fully experienceing their mud baths.

The orphanage was founded by David Sheldrick, the first warden of Tsavo National Park, and run for many years by his wife, Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who developed the innovative hand-rearing techniques and specialized elephant milk formula that are now used across Africa. Exclusive experience. Even after her passing in 2018, her methods continue to support the healthy growth of orphaned elephants, preparing them for eventual release back into the wild.

During the daily public viewing, the orphaned elephants are brought out to the enclosure between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. Exclusive experience. Immerse yourself inors can watch as the elephants play games, splash in the mud, and interact with their keepers.

Each keeper provides an educational talk, sharing the names, stories, and histories of the elephants under their care, explaining how they became orphans and detailing the individual attention and care they require to thrive. Some of the youngest elephants have assigned keepers who provide 24-hour care, including sleeping in the stables, ensuring they develop a sense of security, social skills, and readiness for reintroduction into the wild.

The orphanage is also an opportunity for immerse yourself inors to support conservation through adopting an elephant or contributing to the trust’s initiatives. Exclusive experience. Photographers and wildlife enthusiasts will particularly savor and fully experience capturing the interactions between the baby elephants and their caregivers, making it a memorable experience for all.
